Forty five Leicester residents shared personal experiences of their health conditions at our recent Public Involvement in Health Research Event; guiding researchers and helping to shape their future work.

Members of the public gave their views and shared their thoughts with researchers who are currently developing studies into a number of health conditions at the NIHR Leicester Biomedical Research Centre. Studies including: improving treatment for anxiety in stroke survivors, addressing thunderstorm asthma risks in Leicester, young adults living with cancer and blood pressure control interventions.

When asked what they hope their contribution will bring, one attendee said: “Hopefully my feedback can be considered in planning future research questions and studies.” And another, “I hope the gap will be addressed and young adults living [with cancer] will be supported in order to fight the disease.”
Another attendee added: “I hope that my life experiences can be of help to research and to others.”
“I am keen to help shape services, treatment to be more effective and appropriate for all and to do my bit.”
Ayo Ogunbuyide, Public Involvement and Engagement Manager at the NIHR Leicester BRC, said: “We were delighted that so many people came along to this event, and shared their experiences so generously.
“It’s really important that the research we do here at the BRC is informed and shaped by experts in the condition – the patients, their family and friends. The help we received at the event was indispensable and will truly make a difference to patients in the future.”
