Respiratory researcher awarded Asthma + Lung UK Junior Fellowship

Respiratory researcher Dr Hnin Wint Wint Aung has been awarded a prestigious Asthma + Lung UK Respiratory Junior Fellowship and will receive a grant to investigate how defects in airway cilia contribute to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Dr Aung is an academic clinical lecturer within the NIHR BRC Leicester’s Respiratory and Infection theme.

The fellowship will support a project exploring whether changes in the function and structure of nasal cilia reflect disease processes occurring in the lungs.

Dr Aung explains: “Cilia are tiny hair-like structures that line the airways and play a vital role in clearing mucus, bacteria and other harmful particles. When cilia do not function properly, mucus can build up, increasing the risk of infection and worsening respiratory symptoms.

“Working in collaboration with the Leicester Ciliary Research Team, this project will use advanced laboratory techniques to characterise ciliary function and structure. We will then explore whether non-invasive nasal samples can provide insights into disease mechanisms within the lower airways. I am very grateful for the support from my co-applicants, Dr Neil Greening, Dr Rob Hirst and Dr Adam Wright”

Dr Aung’s previous research has focused on understanding airway inflammation in people with COPD, both during stable disease and exacerbations. This fellowship will extend that work by examining the airway epithelial compartment, potentially building a more complete picture of disease biology.

The findings could contribute to improved disease phenotyping and support the development of more personalised approaches to COPD management in the future.
