Shirley is using her expertise in data analysis to make real a difference to the future of healthcare
“I’m really enjoying using my data science skills to make a meaningful difference to people’s lives.”
These are the words of Data Scientist Shirley Konnor, who joined the Data theme of the NIHR Leicester BRC earlier this year after gaining an MSc, during which she joined us here in Leicester on an internship.
Shirley’s career journey reflects the variety of subjects that can lead people to work in health research. Shirley was studying a degree in statistics and mathematics in Ghana when a conversation with a friend made her want to find out how she could use her degree to pursue a career in healthcare.
“I went on to study an MSc in Data Science, and saw the opportunity to apply for, and join an internship working within the Leicester Real World Evidence Unit. Here Researchers are looking at real world data every day to expand our understanding of health outcomes, trends and pathways of long-term health conditions.
“The months I spent on my Health Data Research UK Black Internship programme in Leicester made me realise I could use my skills to make a difference. I’m delighted to now have secured a Research Assistant role and to be using data science to answer some important questions.”
