Dr Abhishek Chapagain from Chisapani Hospital, Nepal, was warmly welcomed by Dr Jatinder Minhas from the NIHR Leicester BRC’s Cardiovascular Theme during his visit to the Department of Stroke Medicine at Leicester Royal Infirmary.
His visit was part of the European Stroke Organisation’s Department-to-Department Programme.
Dr Chapagain’s observership gave him first-hand experience at one of the busiest stroke centres in the UK. He spent time on the hyper-acute stroke unit, learning how patients are treated in the first hours and days after a stroke, and seeing how our care pathways are shaped by the latest evidence.
As part of his visit he joined clinics where heart and brain specialists work together; observing how doctors treat patients with bleeding in the brain, and the therapies used to support patients recovering after a stroke.
Dr Chapgain also heard about current research taking place within the NIHR Leicester BRC such as the use of ultrasound to study blood flow in the brain.
Dr Minhas, who is an Honorary Consultant Stroke Physician at Leicester’s Hospitals and a Clinical Associate Professor of Stroke Medicine at the University of Leicester, said: “We were delighted to welcome Dr Chapgain to Leicester. We hope what he saw here will support him in improving stroke care at his own hospital and across Nepal, helping to bring international standards into local practice.”
