As we celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we shine a spotlight on Dr Kayesha Coley, a Research Associate in Genetic Epidemiology at the NIHR Leicester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC).
Her journey into science is one of passion, perseverance, and paving the way for others.
Kayesha began her career in Leicester with a PhD in pharmacogenomics—the study of how genetics influence drug responses. Over the years, her research has expanded to explore lung function and lesser-studied symptoms such as pain and cough.
“My love for science started in school—I was always fascinated by biology and chemistry,” Kayesha shares. “That passion led me to study Biochemistry and Genetics at university, then pursue Master’s in Genomic Medicine and ultimately a PhD in Genetic Epidemiology. I’ve always followed what I enjoy, and I hope that inspires other young women to do the same in their own careers.”
In November 2024, she received high commendation from Asthma + Lung UK at the British Thoracic Society Winter Meeting. Among six shortlisted researchers, she was recognized for her outstanding work after presenting to a panel of specialists. This achievement is her step forward in diversifying the field of genetic epidemiology.
As a woman of mixed Black heritage in science, Kayesha acknowledges the importance of representation. “I don’t see many people who look like me in this field, so I’m proud to be here and to serve as a role model for others with similar backgrounds.”
Her advice for aspiring scientists? “Try not to be discouraged by setbacks. Even negative results have value. Try new things and follow what you enjoy.”
