Researchers, healthcare professionals, research delivery staff and public contributors from across the region came together in Nottingham to celebrate 20 years of the NIHR in the East Midlands on 8 September 2026.
Delegates heard from Dr Kehinde Sunmboye, Health and Care Director (Medical) from the East Midlands Regional Research Delivery Network, Dr Alice Mortlock from the NIHR, and Professor Wendy Baird, Dean of the NIHR Academy as part of a packed schedule.
A performance from a local Nottingham choir was received with huge applause.
The celebration provided an opportunity to share learning, celebrate achievements and explore new approaches to delivering research that benefits patients and communities.

A recurring theme throughout the day was the importance of collaboration. Discussions highlighted how partnerships between NHS organisations, universities, community providers and the public are helping to expand access to research and improve health outcomes across the region.
For colleagues from NIHR Biomedical Research Centre Leicester, the event offered valuable opportunities to exchange ideas, strengthen regional networks and learn from innovative research delivery models. The forum reinforced a shared commitment to making research more inclusive, accessible and impactful for patients throughout the East Midlands.
