Half-Time celebrations continue across themes: highlights from Sandpit, Sports day and more

Sep 3, 2025

As part of the NIHR Leicester BRC Half-Time celebrations, colleagues have been coming together across a series of events that shine a light on our research, our people, and the community we’ve built.

On 28 July, the Cancer Theme hosted a vibrant summer collaboration event at the Sir Bob Burgess Building that brought researchers out of the lab and into the same room. The event spotlighted the exciting work of Early Career Researchers and Rising Stars, creating space for sharing research, sparking conversations and strengthening connections across teams.

“It’s events like this that really help with networking,” said PhD student Emmanuella Batu. “It’s actually nice to see and meet people I hadn’t come across before, even though we’re all part of the same theme.”

On 19 August, the Industry & Digital Health Sandpit took place at Charnwood Campus. Clinicians, academics and industry leaders came together to explore how digital health and data can help reduce health inequalities. Teams spent the day developing ideas and ended with pitches to a panel of experts, sparking opportunities for collaboration.

Two days later, on 21 August, the Lifestyle Theme hosted a Sports Day at Bradgate Park. From friendly races to team challenges, colleagues enjoyed the chance to get active, spend time outdoors, and connect with each other in a different setting. Day spent with friendly races and team challenges, brought plenty of laughter (and a touch of competitive spirit).

These events are part of a wider series taking place across the Leicester BRC this summer, marking the midpoint of our five-year funding journey.
