BRC celebrates ‘Half Time’ with summer of celebration

Jun 20, 2025

The summer of 2025 marks the halfway point of our BRC – a perfect opportunity to celebrate everything we have achieved so far, and to look forward to even more success over the next two years.

As over 600 people are now part of the BRC, a whole series of activities are being planned so that everyone has the opportunity to take part.

Two days of bright ideas and detailed discovery kicked off the celebrations earlier this week.

On Wednesday 18th June our PhD Scientific Symposium brought together early career researchers from BRC and LHIIP programme for a day of fresh thinking and future-shaping research.

Our PhD researchers showcased their ongoing work to their peers, supervisors and invited guests with confident, creative and detailed oral and poster presentations.

From exploring how exercise affects appetite hormones to new insights into air pollution, rehabilitation, and inclusive patient involvement, the presentations showed the incredible breadth and impact of our doctoral research across our themes.

Speakers included PhD students, with keynote talks from leading BRC academics Dr Daniel Pan, Professor Gregory Maniatopoulos, Dr Natalie Darko, as well as invited guest speaker, Dr Anshul Thakur from the University of Oxford.

Professor Sally Singh, the BRC’s Director of Training & Capacity Development said: “It was a fantastic day, full of energy, thoughtful questions, and impressive presentations. What stood out most was the level of confidence and clarity with which our PhD students presented their work.”

Clean Air Day walk

The sun also shone brightly on the Environment theme’s Clean Air Day walk on 19 June, which resonates with the theme’s focus on better understanding how environmental factors impact on health conditions.

Around 20 people from the theme, the wider BRC and University as well as Leicester City Council came together to walk, talk, collaborate and enjoy the natural beauty of Victoria Park.

Hosted by the Environment theme lead, Professor Anna Hansell, conversation ranged from hayfever to emissions, transport to the history of air travel, and even the balloon riot.

Thank you to everyone who joined us.

We’re looking forward to these events still to come:
