The recent hot spells have made us all want to spend more time outdoors. But for many people who may not have access or the ability to get outside and enjoy the weather, hot days can make for uncomfortable living.
Now, researchers at the University of Leicester are hoping to better understand the impacts of high indoor temperatures on health through a new study. The team are currently looking for people aged over 45 in Leicester and Leicestershire to take part. This would involve having a small heat and humidity monitor in their home, and completing some short questionnaires over the phone.
Dr Samuel Cai, a Lecturer in Environmental Epidemiology, said: “During the summer months and periods of hot weather, many older people, or people with long term health conditions choose to stay indoors and out of the sun. However, many UK homes are not adequately prepared for hot weather. This means that these people may be experiencing significant indoor heat that is inescapable.
“Through this study we hope to understand what affect this is having on people. What we discover could help us design a larger study, and develop guidance to reduce the health impact of hot indoor conditions we are facing in the changing climate.”
