PPI-SMART group
Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) is important to healthcare research and many funders want to see it when researchers apply for funding.
Although there are a lot of resources available on how to carry out meaningful PPI for people-based, or ‘applied’, research studies, such as clinical trials, unfortunately there’s less guidance on how to do PPI for other studies, including research into new – or better– ways to analyse research data. We call this ‘statistical methodology research’.
Statistical methodology research is a crucial part of healthcare research. It involves finding new – or the best – statistical tools to analyse data. It also includes research on how to best design research studies.
It means that researchers who do people-based health research studies have the best chance of answering their research questions.
Indirectly, it leads to better patient care and outcomes.
This type of research can be difficult to describe to members of the public. It can also be hard to involve people meaningfully in statistical methodology research.
The University of Leicester PPI-SMART group, which stands for PPI for Statistical Methodology and Research Techniques, brings together statistical methodologists and public contributors to:
- conduct research in this area
- develop resources to help researchers do better PPI in this area
- help public contributors feel more confident in supporting this type of research.
Our lead, Professor Laura Gray, who is the Co-Lead for our Data Innovation for Multiple Long-Term Health Conditions and Ethnic Health theme, has written a blog about how our interest in this topic started.
