Adapting the NIHR RDS EDI Toolkit for meaningful inclusion in statistical methods development
Statistical methods shape the backbone of health research—but are they fair to everyone? This initiative aims to help statistical methodology researchers bring Equity, Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) into the heart of statistical methodology research—a space where EDI has often been overlooked.
Why it matters
Statistical methodology research often relies on simulated or historical data, small teams, and technical outputs. That makes embedding EDI both challenging and essential. This project shows how statisticians can:
– Make their methods more inclusive
– Avoid reinforcing inequalities
– Build public trust in research
Building on the NIHR RDS EDI Toolkit
This work builds on the NIHR Research Design Service (RDS) EDI Toolkit, originally designed for applied health research. The team adapted its eight domains, such as public involvement, data analysis, and budgeting, for the unique context of statistical methodology.
Five recommendations for incorporating EDI in statistical methodology research:
- Plan for Inclusion Early: Assess team diversity, training, public involvement, and budget needs from the start.
- Evaluate Equity Impact: When developing new methods, ask: Will this method reduce or worsen inequalities?
- Choose Data Wisely: Use diverse datasets or those with equality impact assessments.
- Be Transparent: Clearly explain how EDI was considered, and where it wasn’t.
- Share Inclusively: Disseminate findings in accessible formats and advocate for EDI in peer review.
