The NIHR Leicester BRC welcomes Professor of Chemical Pathology & Diabetes in Pregnancy Claire Meek, who joined us from the University of Cambridge in December.
Professor Meek brings her extensive experience with pregnant women with type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes to the Lifestyle theme of the Leicester BRC, where she will continue to advance the understanding of diabetes, nutrition and obesity in pregnancy through research.
Claire will also be working alongside University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL) clinical colleagues supporting patients in obstetrics and diabetes across Leicester’s Hospitals.
She said: “I’m enjoying settling in to Leicester after relocating from Cambridge. I’m in the process of finishing the DiGest trial, funded by Diabetes UK, which was supported by colleagues at Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie hospitals. This was a randomised controlled trial to find the best diet for women with gestational diabetes. We’re hoping to have some really interesting findings to share soon.
“In early 2024 we’ll begin to run the 30-site Domino study from Leicester, in which we’re looking for biomarkers in mums with type 1 diabetes which will help us to improve how we care for them, and their babies.”
Claire trained in medicine at the University of Glasgow and worked in Scotland for several years, moving to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in 2008 where she specialised in chemical pathology (medical biochemistry) and metabolic medicine, developing specialist interests in diabetes in pregnancy, lipid disorders and obesity.
