The importance of the role of research nurses is the subject of a commentary by a NIHR Leicester BRC research nurse, published in the Journal of Lower Limb Wound Care earlier this month.
In the article, research nurse from the Cardiovascular theme of the NIHR Leicester BRC, Charles Mensah, discusses the changing and significant role that vascular research nurses play in advancing innovation and evidence-based practice in the treatment of lower limb wounds.
Charles said: “Vascular research nurses are in a unique position to help the complicated subject of lower limb wound care translate research into practice.
“Because we are both researchers and clinicians we are able to:
- Improve access to new treatments and wound technologies
- Foster inclusive, patient-centred clinical trial participation
- Lead quality improvement and service evaluation activities
- Support the professional development of research-literate clinical teams.
“Empowering research nurses is crucial to promote long-term improvements in patient outcomes with lower limb wound care that is effective, efficient and equitable.”
